Candlelit Classics: Rutter's Requiem
Sussex Voiceworks
St Paul's Church, set back a little from the Friday night clamour of West Street, welcomed over one hundred members of the Sussex Voiceworks choir for a recital of John Rutter's 'Requiem'. The members of the choir - a registered charity led by musical director Peter Farrant - do not audition, and the group had met only hours before the concert to audition tonight's performance. These two facts make the quality of sound and arrangement on show all the more impressive.

Sussex Voiceworks' past performances have included concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, Winchester Cathedral and Bath Abbey, as well as tours around the UK and abroad, but I bet this choir find it hard to find a better venue than Brighton's own St Paul's, where the candlelight and wonderful acoustics made for an enchanting atmosphere, as did the subtle layering of harmonies and gradually building volume of voices.

ThreeWeeks in Brighton (Brighton Festival Fringe 2010 Review)

Heavenly choir
From the The Argus, first published Thursday 28th Dec 2006.
We frequently visit friends in Hove and for the past few years have been treated to Sussex Voiceworks' concerts locally. We have always enjoyed these choral concerts but the Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 16 was such a pleasure that we wanted to make a more public statement of appreciation.

The programme was a delight from start to finish, performed with feeling and obvious enjoyment by the singers. There was strong support from the excellent pianist and organist and the soprano soloist had a most beautiful, clear voice.

Everyone enjoyed the rousing and amusing interludes from the brass quintet, Mardi Brass, and judging by the lusty singing, we were not the only ones who relished joining in the audience carols.

Many thanks to all involved in putting on the concert, and congratulations to Sussex Voiceworks' energetic and engaging musical director for producing such a tremendous pre-Christmas treat.

We have already noted in our diaries to be free for the choir's engagement in the Brighton Festival and hope to be free for its June concert at All Saints church.
